Mahjong in the Garden
If you've been curious about American Mahjong but didn't know where to start, here's your chance to learn in one of Huntsville's most beautiful settings. Mahjong in the Garden brings certified instructors from Wanna Mahj to the private patio at Murray Hall, where you'll learn the tile-based strategy game surrounded by autumn gardens. The weekend offers three different sessions — a beginner introduction, an intermediate skills builder, and a guided play session — so you can jump in at your comfort level or progress through all three. The event runs October 2-4, 2026, with sessions starting at 5:30 p.m. Friday's Mahjong 101 covers the basics from tile recognition to gameplay etiquette, while Saturday's 102 session helps newer players build confidence with strategy and decision-making. Sunday's guided play lets you practice with instructor support right there to answer questions. Each session includes light refreshments and all the Mahjong supplies you'll need, plus admission to explore the Botanical Garden before or after your time at the table. Individual session tickets are available for members and non-members, with a discounted weekend pass if you want the full experience. This workshop welcomes all ages and skill levels, making it a nice multigenerational activity for families with older kids or teens who enjoy games and puzzles. Since sessions are held during FestiFall, you'll have the bonus of exploring the Garden's seasonal displays while you're there. Tickets are non-refundable and prices weren't specified in the event details, so check the Huntsville Botanical Garden website for current rates.
