Makers on the Mountain: Featuring Tim Martin, Traditional Chairmaker
Burritt on the Mountain invites families to step back in time and witness the art of traditional chairmaking this Memorial Day weekend. North Alabama artisan Tim Martin will be demonstrating his craft throughout the day, using hand tools and techniques passed down through generations of Appalachian furniture makers. Watching him work is like seeing history come alive — kids and adults alike will be mesmerized by the precision and patience required to transform raw wood into a functional piece of art. It's a wonderful opportunity for children to see that furniture doesn't always come from a store and to appreciate the skill behind handmade objects. Martin will be set up on the Meals porch in the Historic Park from 10:00 AM until 3:00 PM on Saturday, May 30th. The demonstration is included with regular Burritt admission, making it an easy add-on to a day exploring the museum's historic buildings, barnyard animals, and scenic overlooks of Huntsville. Families can drop by anytime during those hours to watch and ask questions about his process. This experience resonates especially well with school-age children who are curious about how things are made, though even younger kids will enjoy watching the wood shavings curl off the tools. It's a quieter, contemplative activity that offers a nice contrast to Burritt's more active outdoor attractions. Consider packing a picnic to enjoy on the mountain after you've spent time with this master craftsman.
