Trail Build: Hickory Cove

Families looking for a meaningful outdoor adventure can join trail-building expert Tim Barnack in creating a new pathway that will connect Hickory Cove to Monte Sano. This hands-on conservation project gives kids and adults alike the chance to learn basic trail construction skills while contributing to Huntsville's growing network of hiking trails. No prior experience is necessary, making this an accessible way for families to spend a morning working together in nature and seeing the tangible results of their efforts. The project takes place on August 5, 2026, starting at 8:30 AM from the Bankhead Parkway turnoff. Since this meeting spot doesn't have a street address, organizers provide a map link for directions. Volunteers should be prepared for a moderate workout—the day involves hiking up to 4 miles with more than 200 feet of elevation gain. Each participant needs to register individually (guardians can sign up on behalf of children), and registration is required as each person must complete a waiver. Come dressed for outdoor work in sturdy, closed-toe shoes, and bring bug spray, sunscreen, work gloves, eye protection, and plenty of water. While the event welcomes all ages, families should consider whether younger children can handle the hiking distance and physical demands.
