Botanical Bookworms · Wild Connections: Discovering Nature Through Animals
The Huntsville Botanical Garden's Botanical Bookworms series brings together readers and nature lovers for thoughtful discussions that bridge literature and the living world. This month's session, "Wild Connections: Discovering Nature Through Animals," explores how creatures great and small deepen our relationship with the environment through three compelling books: Elisabeth Tova Bailey's meditative "The Sound of a Wild Snail Eating," Tristan Gooley's observational guide "How to Read Nature," and Sy Montgomery's heartfelt memoir "How To Be a Good Creature." A guest speaker who works with wild animals will share their experiences, adding real-world perspective to the literary conversation. Don't worry if you haven't finished all three titles—readers who've tackled even one book are welcome to participate. The program runs from 10:00 a.m. to noon on Thursday, November 12, at the Huntsville Botanical Garden. The morning begins with welcomes and introductions, followed by either a guided garden tour or the guest speaker presentation. The heart of the gathering is the hour-long book discussion, where families can share insights and questions before wrapping up with announcements and a chance to win door prizes. Garden members pay $20, while non-members pay $40, which includes garden admission for the day. This event works beautifully for families with older elementary through teen readers who enjoy nature writing, though younger children are welcome if they can sit through discussion time. Consider reading at least one featured book together beforehand to enrich your family's participation, and arrive a few minutes early to browse the garden and settle in before the program begins.
