When kids think of nature, they might picture birds, trees, or butterflies—but beneath the surface and clinging to bark lies an entire hidden kingdom waiting to be discovered. This Nature Academy session invites young scientists to explore the often-overlooked world of fungi and lichens, learning how these remarkable organisms work behind the scenes to keep ecosystems healthy. Through observation and hands-on investigation, children will uncover how mushrooms and lichens recycle nutrients, support biodiversity, and play essential roles in the natural world around us. The program runs at the Huntsville Botanical Garden with sessions offered on both Tuesday, October 20 and Wednesday, October 21, 2026, starting at 10:00 AM. Designed for kids ages 6 through 12, the groups are thoughtfully divided by age—one for 6-8 year olds and another for 9-12 year olds—ensuring that activities and discussions are developmentally appropriate.
