Hike at Blevins Gap South
Blevins Gap Nature Preserve offers families one of the most rewarding hiking experiences in Huntsville, with panoramic views stretching across the city and into Jackson County to the east. This moderately challenging trek covers 3.25 miles and takes about two and a half hours, making it an excellent choice for families with older elementary kids and teens ready for a bit of adventure. The trail system winds through the preserve on well-maintained paths, offering a satisfying blend of physical challenge and natural beauty that will leave everyone feeling accomplished. The hike kicks off from the Blevins Gap Trailhead at 9:00 AM on October 31st and follows the Bill and Marion Certain Trail south before looping back north via the West Bluff Trail. Be prepared for a workout right from the start — the trail climbs about 300 feet in the first half mile, which gets hearts pumping but rewards hikers with those stunning overlook views. After that initial climb, the terrain levels off considerably, making the remainder of the walk much easier. Important note: Blevins Gap has multiple trailheads, so double-check that you're heading to the correct one at 3470 Cecil Ashburn Drive SE. This hike works best for families with children who have some trail experience and the stamina for a moderate climb. Bring plenty of water, wear sturdy shoes with good traction, and consider packing snacks for a scenic break at the overlook. Registration is required, and organizers will send cancellation notices via email if weather or trail conditions make hiking unsafe.
