Trail Build: Blevins Gap
Families looking for a meaningful outdoor experience can roll up their sleeves together at this trail-building volunteer event at Blevins Gap Nature Preserve. You'll be helping extend the Bailey Cove Trail to create a new loop on the north side of the preserve — real conservation work that will benefit hikers for years to come. No previous trail-building experience is needed, making this an ideal introduction to land stewardship for kids and adults alike. The work involves hiking up to three miles with some elevation changes (more than 250 feet), so participants should be comfortable with moderate physical activity. The event kicks off at 9 AM on October 17, 2026, at the Walsingham Trailhead, located at 7855 Walsingham Road SE in Huntsville. From Cecil Ashburn Drive, turn left at the first signal onto Donegal Drive SE, continue for about half a mile to Walsingham Road SE, and turn left. Registration is required for each participant, including children, as everyone must sign a waiver. Guardians can register on behalf of minors. If weather or trail conditions force a cancellation, registered participants will receive email notification. Come prepared with sturdy, closed-toe shoes, and consider bringing bug spray, sunscreen, work gloves, eye protection, and plenty of water. This is a great way for families with school-age children to spend a morning outdoors while contributing to the local trail system. Young kids should be able to handle the moderate hike, though parents might want to gauge their child's stamina for this kind of terrain before committing.
