Hump Day Hike at Monte Sano: Oak Park
Looking for a midweek adventure that gets the whole family moving? The Land Trust of North Alabama's Hump Day Hike series offers a perfect excuse to explore Monte Sano's wooded trails on a Wednesday afternoon. This particular route from the Oak Park trailhead takes hikers on a scenic loop through some of the preserve's most rewarding terrain, including a stop at Buzzards Roost overlook where you can catch your breath and take in views of the surrounding landscape. The route strings together several trails—Oak Park, Bankhead, Dallas Branch, and Buzzards Roost—before looping back downhill to where you started. Plan for a two-hour excursion covering roughly three to three-and-a-half miles, and come prepared for a moderate to difficult hike with some uphill climbs on the front end. The hike kicks off at 3 p.m. on October 21st at the Oak Park trailhead located at 2250 Oakwood Avenue NE. Registration is required through the Land Trust's website, and if weather or trail conditions force a cancellation, you'll receive an email notification. This hike works well for families with older children and teens who have some trail experience and the stamina for a longer outing. Younger kids who are comfortable with distance and elevation gain can certainly join in, but keep in mind that the "downhill return" means you'll be climbing uphill first. Bring plenty of water, wear sturdy shoes with good traction, and consider trekking poles if anyone in your group appreciates extra stability on uneven terrain.
