Little Forest Friends
Little Forest Friends offers toddlers and preschoolers their first gentle introduction to the wonders of the natural world. These specially designed nature discovery sessions invite families with children ages 18 months to 3 years to explore the beautiful forest habitat at Blevins Gap Nature Preserve through stories, songs, and nature-inspired art activities. Led by naturalist Elizabeth Moats, each playful gathering aims to nurture that innate curiosity young children have about the plants and animals around them, building a foundation of respect and wonder that can last a lifetime. Older siblings are welcome to tag along, making this an outing the whole family can enjoy together. The program meets at 10:00 a.m. on November 9, 2026, at the Little Foot Loop via the Fanning Trailhead on Cecil Ashburn Drive. The event is free, though the Land Trust welcomes memberships to support their mission. Space is limited and reservations are required — families should register using one parent or guardian's information and reserve just one spot per family regardless of how many children are attending. There are no waitlists, so if the session fills up, check back periodically as spots sometimes reopen. Come prepared for a morning outdoors with closed-toe shoes for everyone, long pants to protect little legs from brush, bug spray, sunscreen, and water bottles. An adult must accompany all children during the program. After the session wraps up, families are welcome to spread out a blanket and enjoy a picnic lunch they've brought from home, extending the outdoor adventure a bit longer.
