Monday Mountain Explorers: Chapman Mountain Nature Preserve
Monday Mountain Explorers offers homeschooling families a wonderful weekly opportunity to connect with nature while building community with other learners. Led by Jen Jackson at Chapman Mountain Nature Preserve, this seasonal program introduces elementary-aged children to Alabama's rich biodiversity through nature walks, family-led exploration activities, and the gentle art of field journaling. Each session centers around a seasonal theme, with literature readings that spark curiosity before heading outdoors to discover what's actually living, growing, and changing on the mountain. It's designed specifically for kids ages 5-11 and their caregivers, making it an ideal mid-morning outing for homeschool families. The program meets Monday mornings at 9:30 at the preserve, located at 1263 U.S. Highway 72 East. Plan for about two hours of outdoor exploration, and dress everyone in weather-appropriate layers and sturdy shoes for walking trails. Each child receives their own field journal to keep and bring back to future sessions, helping them build a personal record of discoveries throughout the season. Families should pack water and snacks for the hike, and many participants choose to bring picnic lunches to enjoy together after the official program ends, extending the sense of community that makes these gatherings special. Finding the preserve is straightforward but requires attention: heading east from Huntsville, cross Chapman Mountain and make a u-turn at Moores Mill Road, then watch for the paved entrance on your right just after the silver guardrail ends. Follow the gravel drive down to the parking area, where you'll join other families ready to explore Alabama's natural world together.
