Paws in the Park; Hays Nature Preserve
Paws in the Park combines two wonderful things — a peaceful nature walk and the chance to spend time with adoptable shelter dogs. Hosted by Huntsville Animal Services and Healthy Huntsville, this free morning event invites families to stroll the trails at Hays Nature Preserve either with their own leashed pup or by walking a shelter dog who could use some fresh air and gentle exercise. It's a relaxed way to enjoy the fall weather while helping dogs from the shelter experience a calm outing beyond kennel walls, and you might just meet your family's next four-legged member along the way. The walk takes place Saturday morning, November 7, 2026, starting at 8:00 AM at Hays Nature Preserve on Hays Preserve Trail in southeast Huntsville. There's no cost to participate, and all ages are welcome. If you'd like to walk a shelter dog, your group must include at least one adult who is 19 or older. All dogs — whether yours or from the shelter — must remain on leash throughout the event, making it a safe environment for everyone to enjoy the guided walk together. This event works especially well for families considering adding a dog to their household, since it provides a neutral outdoor setting where your current pets can meet a potential new friend without the pressure of a shelter environment. Even if you're not looking to adopt, it's a lovely way to spend a Saturday morning supporting local animal welfare while your kids learn about responsible pet care and community service.
