Trail Build: Hickory Cove
Families looking for a meaningful outdoor adventure can join trail expert Tim Barnack in creating a brand-new hiking path that will link Hickory Cove to Monte Sano. This hands-on conservation project welcomes volunteers of all ages and abilities—no prior trail-building experience necessary. Kids who enjoy exploring nature and working as a team will find this especially rewarding, as they'll see the direct impact of their efforts while learning about trail stewardship and local wilderness. The build takes place on October 28, 2026, starting at 8:30 a.m. from the Bankhead Parkway turnoff (use the provided map link for exact directions, as there's no street address). Registration is required for each participant, including children, with guardians signing waivers for minors. The project involves hiking up to four miles with over 200 feet of elevation change, so families should come prepared for moderate physical activity. There's no fee to participate. Dress everyone in sturdy, closed-toe shoes and bring plenty of water. Bug spray, sunscreen, work gloves, and eye protection are recommended for comfort and safety. Since the work takes place outdoors on natural terrain, organizers will notify registered participants by email if weather or trail conditions require cancellation. This is an excellent opportunity for families with school-aged children to contribute to Huntsville's growing trail network while spending quality time together in the woods.
