Trail Build: Hickory Cove
Families looking for a meaningful outdoor adventure can join trail builder Tim Barnack for a special volunteer day creating a new pathway that will connect Hickory Cove to Monte Sano. This hands-on conservation project welcomes volunteers of all ages and experience levels, making it an excellent opportunity for kids to learn about trail stewardship while working alongside their parents. The work involves hiking up to 4 miles with about 200 feet of elevation change, so participants should be comfortable with moderate physical activity. The project takes place on October 21, 2026, starting at 8:30 a.m. from the Bankhead Parkway turnoff (use the provided map link for directions, as there's no street address). Registration is required for each participant, with guardians able to sign up on behalf of children. Each person will need to complete a waiver. The event is free, and no prior trail-building experience is necessary—organizers will provide instruction and guidance throughout the morning. Plan to dress your family in sturdy, closed-toe shoes suitable for hiking and outdoor work. Bring along bug spray, sunscreen, work gloves, eye protection, and plenty of water for everyone. While the event is family-friendly, consider whether younger children can handle the distance and elevation involved. Older elementary and middle school kids typically thrive in this type of active volunteer setting. If weather or trail conditions force a cancellation, registered participants will receive an email notification.
