Trail Build: Mill Creek
Families looking for a meaningful outdoor project will find it at Mill Creek Preserve, where the Land Trust of North Alabama and Madison Greenway & Trails are building new hiking paths. This hands-on workday invites volunteers of all experience levels to help clear vegetation, remove debris, and smooth out trail surfaces that will welcome future hikers. The work takes place on relatively flat terrain with a short walk of less than half a mile to reach the build site, making it accessible for families who want to contribute to their community's green spaces together. The trail build takes place Saturday, October 24, 2026, beginning at 8:30 AM at Gray Cemetery in Madison. There's no cost to participate, but advance registration is required for each family member attending — guardians can sign up on behalf of children. Plan to spend a morning working outdoors in a collaborative environment where novices and experienced trail builders work side by side. Kids ages 6-14 will find tasks suited to their abilities, from picking up sticks to helping tamp down soil. Come prepared with sturdy closed-toe shoes and long pants to protect against brush and insects. Organizers recommend bringing your own work gloves, eye protection, bug spray, sunscreen, and plenty of water. If weather forces a cancellation, registered participants will receive an email notification, so check your inbox the morning of the event.
