Botanical Bookworms · Wild Connections: Discovering Nature Through Animals
Botanical Bookworms offers something special for families who love both reading and nature — a monthly gathering that weaves together literature, garden exploration, and lively discussion. This November session, "Wild Connections: Discovering Nature Through Animals," explores how creatures big and small connect us to the natural world. The program features three thought-provoking books: Elisabeth Tova Bailey's intimate "The Sound of a Wild Snail Eating," Tristan Gooley's observational guide "How to Read Nature," and Sy Montgomery's memoir "How To Be a Good Creature." Don't worry if you haven't finished all three — you're welcome whether you've read one title or all of them. The morning unfolds in thoughtfully planned segments starting at 10 a.m. After welcome and introductions, you'll choose between a guided garden tour or listening to a guest speaker share firsthand experiences working with wild animals. The heart of the gathering is the book discussion from 11 to 11:50 a.m., where families and nature enthusiasts swap insights and perspectives. The session wraps up at noon, and everyone has a chance to win door prizes. Garden members pay $20, while non-members pay $40, which includes garden admission for the day. While the material appeals to thoughtful readers of all ages, younger children may enjoy the garden tour portion most, while tweens and teens who love animals will find plenty to engage with during the discussion. Parents should note this is more book club than hands-on kids' program, making it ideal for families with older children or those comfortable with conversation-based activities.
