Foraging Hike at Harvest Square
Ever wonder what wild edibles grow right here in North Alabama during the late summer? This educational foraging hike at Harvest Square Nature Preserve offers families a chance to learn about native plants and fungi that can be safely harvested and prepared at home. Led by experienced forager Casey Lanier, participants will search for seasonal finds like persimmons, wild grapes, maypop, and other August treasures. The route will be determined by Casey based on what's currently available in the preserve, making each hike a unique learning experience. The hike begins at 8:00 AM on August 8th at Harvest Square Nature Preserve, located at 111 Allyson Sadie Boulevard in Harvest. The walk is rated as easy and scheduled for two hours, though it may run longer depending on what the group discovers. Registration is required, and organizers will send weather or trail condition updates to your registered email if plans change. While the hike is open to all ages, keep in mind this is a learning-focused outing with frequent stops for identification and discussion rather than a continuous nature walk. This hike emphasizes identification and education only—participants won't be collecting or consuming anything during the walk itself. Families with curious children who enjoy nature and don't mind a slower pace will find this especially rewarding. Consider bringing water, sun protection, and comfortable walking shoes for the August heat. Those interested in wild foods, sustainable living, or simply learning more about the natural resources in their own backyard will leave with practical knowledge they can use during future foraging adventures.
