Hike at Chapman Mountain
Chapman Mountain Nature Preserve offers families a chance to explore the higher elevations of this scenic conservation area through a guided group hike along its interconnected trail system. Starting from the pavilion, hikers will wind through the preserve on trails with evocative names like Moonshine, Whole Planet, Terry, and Bulldog, creating a loop that showcases the upper reaches of the mountain. This moderate hike covers about three miles and takes a bit more than two hours, making it a solid morning adventure for families with kids who are comfortable with sustained walking and some uphill stretches. The hike begins at 8:30 a.m. on Saturday, September 5, giving families a head start before the day heats up. The preserve is located at 1263 U.S. Highway 72 East in Huntsville—coming from town, you'll cross Chapman Mountain, make a U-turn at Moores Mill Road, and watch for the paved entrance after the silver guard rail ends. Registration is required, and organizers will notify participants by email if weather forces a cancellation. Because this route tackles the preserve's upper elevations, it's best suited for school-age children and teens who have some hiking experience. Younger kids who tire easily on inclines might find the distance and terrain challenging. Bring water, wear sturdy shoes with good traction, and consider packing a light snack for the trail. The group format makes this hike particularly welcoming for families new to the preserve who want to learn the lay of the land with experienced guides.
