Trail Build: Blevins Gap

Families looking for a meaningful outdoor experience can lend a hand building new trail at Blevins Gap Nature Preserve. The Land Trust is extending Bailey Cove Trail to create a fresh loop on the north side of the preserve, and volunteers of all ages are welcome to help shape this community resource. It's a chance for kids to learn how trails are made while getting their hands dirty alongside experienced stewards—no prior trail-building experience needed. The work day starts at 9 AM on September 5, 2026, at the Walsingham Trailhead (7855 Walsingham Road SE). From Cecil Ashburn Drive, turn left at the first signal onto Donegal Drive SE, go four-tenths of a mile, then turn left on Walsingham Road SE. Volunteers should be prepared to hike up to three miles with more than 250 feet of elevation gain as they work. Sturdy closed-toe shoes are required, and the organizers recommend bringing bug spray, sunscreen, work gloves, eye protection, and plenty of water. Registration is required for each participant—guardians can sign up minors, but everyone needs their own waiver completed. This is a good fit for school-age kids who can handle moderate hiking and enjoy hands-on projects. Younger children may find the distance and elevation challenging, so consider your family's hiking experience. If weather or trail conditions force a cancellation, registered participants will receive an email notification at the address provided during sign-up.
