Monday Mountain Explorers: Chapman Mountain Nature Preserve

Monday Mountain Explorers offers homeschooling families a weekly chance to build nature literacy while their elementary-aged children discover Alabama's biodiversity firsthand. Led by Jen Jackson at Chapman Mountain Nature Preserve, this enrichment series combines read-aloud nature literature with guided exploration, field journaling, and the kind of outdoor discovery that turns kids into confident observers of the world around them. Families work together through seasonal themes, making this as much about strengthening family bonds as it is about learning to identify native plants or track woodland creatures. Sessions meet Monday mornings at 9:30 AM at Chapman Mountain Nature Preserve, located at 1263 U.S. Highway 72 East. The program is designed for children ages 5-11 with their caregivers joining in the experience. Each family receives a field journal to keep and bring to future sessions, creating an ongoing record of discoveries throughout the school year. Dress for a short hike in whatever weather the season brings, and pack water and snacks for your crew. The preserve entrance can be tricky to spot when heading east from Huntsville—cross the mountain, make a U-turn at Moores Mill Road, then watch for the paved entrance on your right just after the silver guardrail ends. Many families pack a picnic lunch to enjoy after the program wraps up, taking advantage of the peaceful setting before heading home. This is outdoor learning at its most relaxed, where curiosity matters more than perfection and muddy shoes are a badge of honor.
