Pollinator Party
Blevins Gap Nature Preserve is hosting a Pollinator Party that turns kids into citizen scientists for the morning. Families will join the Great Southeast Pollinator Census by observing and counting how many bees, butterflies, and other pollinators visit specific plants over 15-minute intervals — no expertise required, as volunteers will teach participants what to look for. Between counting sessions, children can play Pollinator BINGO for prizes, create nature-themed crafts, and explore educational displays about the vital relationship between pollinators and plants. The event runs from 9:00 AM to noon on August 22nd at the preserve's pollinator garden on Cecil Ashburn Drive SE. Structured activities include a pollinator plant identification walk at 9:30 AM led by Sara Johnson, followed by a Beekeeping 101 presentation from the Madison County Beekeepers Association at 10:30 AM. Free snow cones from Southerland Sno Depot will keep everyone cool throughout the morning. Admission details weren't specified, but the casual structure suggests this is a drop-in event where families can participate in activities as their schedule allows. This hands-on science experience works especially well for elementary-aged children who are naturally curious about insects and the outdoors. Bring hats, sunscreen, and water bottles since you'll be spending time in the garden during late summer. The combination of structured learning, playful activities, and real scientific contribution makes this more than just a nature walk — kids leave understanding how their observations help researchers track pollinator populations across the Southeast.
