Trail Build: Hickory Cove

Families with older kids and teens looking for a meaningful outdoor adventure can help create a brand-new trail connecting Hickory Cove to Monte Sano. Led by trail expert Tim Barnack, this hands-on volunteer project gives families the chance to work together while contributing to Huntsville's beloved greenway system. It's a rare opportunity to see what goes into the trails your family loves to hike, and participants will feel genuine pride knowing they helped build a path that friends and neighbors will enjoy for years to come. The project kicks off at 8:30 AM on September 9, 2026, meeting at the Bankhead Parkway turnoff (use the provided map link for exact directions, as there's no street address). Volunteers should be prepared for a moderately challenging day with up to 4 miles of hiking and more than 200 feet of elevation change, so this works best for families with children who are comfortable with longer walks and uneven terrain. There's no cost to participate, but registration is required for each person attending, including kids, as everyone needs to sign a waiver. Dress everyone in sturdy, closed-toe shoes and bring work gloves, eye protection, bug spray, sunscreen, and plenty of water.
