Trail Build: Hickory Cove

Families looking for a meaningful outdoor adventure can roll up their sleeves and help create something lasting at this trail-building volunteer day. Led by Tim Barnack, participants will work together to construct a new trail segment connecting Hickory Cove to Monte Sano—a project that will benefit the Huntsville hiking community for years to come. No previous trail-building experience is needed, making this an ideal opportunity for families with older children to learn new skills while contributing to the local trail network. Expect to hike up to four miles with more than 200 feet of elevation change throughout the morning, so participants should be prepared for moderate physical activity. The project begins at 8:30 AM on September 30, 2026, at the Bankhead Parkway turnoff. Since this trailhead doesn't have a street address, you'll need to use the provided map link to navigate there. Volunteers should come prepared with sturdy, closed-toe shoes, work gloves, eye protection, sunscreen, bug spray, and plenty of water. Each participant needs to complete a separate registration and sign a waiver, though parents can register on behalf of their children. This event is best suited for kids aged 10 and up who enjoy being active outdoors and don't mind getting a bit dirty. The physical demands make it more appropriate for families with older, adventure-ready children rather than little ones.
