Trail Build: Mill Creek

Families looking for a meaningful outdoor project can roll up their sleeves at Mill Creek Preserve for a hands-on trail building day with the Land Trust and Madison Greenway & Trails. This is a chance for kids and parents to work side-by-side clearing vegetation, removing debris and trip hazards, and smoothing the trail surface to create safe paths for future hikers. The terrain is gentle with minimal elevation changes, and the work area is less than half a mile from the staging point at Gray Cemetery, making it manageable for younger volunteers and first-timers. The workday kicks off at 8:30 AM on Saturday, September 26, 2026, at Gray Cemetery in Madison. No prior trail building experience is needed, but participants should wear sturdy closed-toe shoes and long pants for protection. Each person requires their own registration and signed waiver—guardians can register on behalf of children ages 6-14. Cost is free, though donations to support the Land Trust's work are always welcome. If weather or trail conditions force a cancellation, registered participants will receive an email notification. Come prepared with bug spray, sunscreen, work gloves, eye protection, and plenty of water. This is an ideal introduction to conservation volunteering for elementary and middle school-aged kids who enjoy being outdoors and working with their hands.
