Trail Build: Mill Creek

Families with elementary and middle school-aged kids can help expand Huntsville's trail network at this hands-on volunteer workday at Mill Creek Preserve. Working alongside the Land Trust and Madison Greenway & Trails, participants will clear vegetation and debris from a new trail corridor, then smooth and compact the path surface. It's a straightforward introduction to trail building that doesn't require any previous experience, and the relatively flat terrain and short walk (under half a mile) make it accessible for younger helpers who want to contribute something meaningful to their community. The workday begins at 8:30 AM on Saturday, September 12, 2026, at Gray Cemetery in Madison. There's no cost to participate, but registration is required for each person attending, as everyone needs to sign a waiver (guardians can register on behalf of kids ages 6-14). Organizers will email registered participants if weather or trail conditions force a cancellation. Come prepared for outdoor work: long pants and sturdy closed-toe shoes are a must, and you'll want to bring bug spray, sunscreen, work gloves, eye protection, and plenty of water. This is an ideal opportunity for families who enjoy the area's trails to give back while teaching kids about conservation and community service in a hands-on way.
