Trail Care: Cane Creek Canyon

Families with kids who love the outdoors can spend a rewarding morning at Cane Creek Canyon Nature Preserve, working alongside Land Stewards to maintain the preserve's extensive trail system. This hands-on volunteer experience gives families a behind-the-scenes look at what it takes to keep trails safe and accessible while teaching kids the value of conservation and community service. Tasks vary depending on trail conditions and the season, so each visit brings something different—whether it's clearing brush, repairing trail markers, or maintaining drainage systems. The event takes place on September 13, 2026, starting at 9:00 AM at the preserve in Tuscumbia (about 45 minutes west of Huntsville). No trail maintenance experience is necessary, though participants should be prepared for a moderate workout—volunteers may hike up to 3 miles with elevation changes exceeding 250 feet. The Land Trust provides tools, extra work gloves, and water, but families should bring their own water bottles, snacks, and work gloves if they have them. Everyone needs to wear sturdy, closed-toe shoes suitable for uneven terrain. This experience works best for kids ages 10-14 who can handle physical activity and enjoy being outdoors. Each family member needs a separate registration (minors can be registered by a guardian), as everyone must sign a waiver. If weather or trail conditions force a cancellation, registered participants will receive an email notification.
