Canopy | Outdoor Installation
The Land Trust of North Alabama is bringing an extraordinary art experience to Hickory Cove Nature Preserve for a single autumn day. CANOPY, an outdoor installation that merges sculpture with landscape, will transform the preserve into a living gallery where families can experience art within nature's embrace. Visitors reserve private 15-minute sittings on handcrafted timber benches, creating an intimate moment to observe how the artwork responds to the surrounding forest. This isn't a hurried walkthrough—it's a chance to slow down, look closely, and let children experience how art and environment speak to each other. The installation takes place on October 18 at 1500 Trailhead Main St, with tickets ranging from $20 for a standard sitting to $40 for an artist sitting that includes ten quiet minutes with the creator. Families interested in capturing specific lighting conditions can choose morning, dappled, or evening slots for $30. Each reservation accommodates one or two people, so parents might consider booking back-to-back times for larger families. Tickets go on sale September 7 and remain available through October 16. Since sittings are brief and contemplative, this experience works best for school-age children who can appreciate fifteen minutes of focused observation—think ages eight and up. Younger siblings might enjoy a nature walk along the preserve's trails before or after older kids take their turn beneath the canopy. Dress for October weather and consider bringing a light jacket, as you'll be sitting still outdoors. The preserve's natural beauty makes this a memorable way to introduce children to installation art.
