Ceramics: Face Mugs

Face jugs are one of the most intriguing pottery traditions in American folk art, with roots stretching back through African, European, and pre-Columbian cultures. In the American South, these distinctive vessels served everything from practical water storage to spiritual protection, each one reflecting the maker's unique vision and cultural heritage. Now your family can try their hand at this centuries-old craft at Burritt on the Mountain, where you'll transform a wheel-thrown mug into your own expressive face vessel. No pottery experience is needed—just bring your imagination and a sense of play as you sculpt features, add personality, and create a functional piece of art that carries on this meaningful tradition. The class meets Saturday, October 17th from 3:00 to 5:00 PM, with a follow-up glazing session on Sunday, October 25th from 1:00 to 3:00 PM. The $60 fee covers both sessions and all materials, and you'll work with instructor Paul Wieland, who has over 15 years of pottery experience and has taught throughout the region. Classes are held at Burritt on the Mountain at 3101 Burritt Drive, and you'll need to register by October 10th at 5:00 PM. If you can't make the glazing session, your instructor will apply your chosen glaze for you. This workshop welcomes all ages and skill levels, making it a wonderful multi-generational activity where teens, adults, and grandparents can create together. Just wear close-toed shoes and be ready to get a little clay under your fingernails. You'll leave with a one-of-a-kind mug that tells a story—perfect for morning coffee or as a conversation piece on your shelf.
